Caring for your Glasses: Do's and Don'ts;
Your glasses are more than a vision aid—they're an investment in your eye health and an essential part of your daily routine. Whether you wear prescription lenses or sunglasses, taking proper care of your eyewear ensures clear vision, extends the life of your frames, and saves you money in the long run. Here are some essential dos and don’ts to help you keep your glasses in top shape.
✅ DO: Clean Your Glasses Properly
Use a microfiber cloth and a lens cleaning solution specifically designed for eyewear. If you don’t have lens cleaner on hand, a drop of mild dish soap with lukewarm water works well. Gently rub the lenses and frames, then rinse and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Tip: Always rinse your glasses before wiping them. This helps remove dust or debris that could scratch the lenses.
❌ DON’T: Use Your Shirt or Tissue
While it’s tempting to use your shirt sleeve or a paper towel, these materials can scratch your lenses and leave behind lint. Avoid any rough or abrasive fabrics that could damage your glasses.
✅ DO: Store Your Glasses in a Case
When you're not wearing your glasses, store them in a hard-shell case. This protects them from dust, scratches, and accidental drops. If you're placing them down temporarily, always set them with the lenses facing upward.
❌ DON’T: Leave Your Glasses in Hot Places
Avoid leaving your glasses on the dashboard of your car, near heaters, or in direct sunlight. High heat can warp your frames and damage lens coatings, especially if they have anti-reflective or photochromic features.
✅ DO: Use Both Hands to Take Off Your Glasses
Using both hands helps maintain the shape and alignment of the frame. Taking them off with one hand can gradually bend the arms and lead to a poor fit.
❌ DON’T: Ignore Loose Screws or Misalignment
If your glasses start to feel loose or crooked, don’t wait. Bring them in for a quick adjustment. Most optometry clinics, including ours, offer complimentary frame adjustments and minor repairs.
✅ DO: Get Regular Maintenance
Just like your eyes need regular check-ups, so do your glasses. At Mission Creek Optometry, we recommend bringing your eyewear in for a cleaning and fit check every few months to ensure everything is in top condition.
Proper care of your glasses helps preserve not only the physical condition of the frame and lenses but also your overall visual experience. With just a few simple habits, you can keep your glasses clean, clear, and comfortable for years to come.
