Contact Lenses vs. Eyeglasses: The Great Debate

The choice between contact lenses and eyeglasses isn’t as simple as it might seem at first glance. Before you make your choice and visiting your Kelowna Optometrist for either contact lenses or eyeglasses, you should weigh the pros and cons of each carefully. Most people take several factors into account: the acuity of their vision, the comfort and convenience they get from each option, their budget, and how each affects their style. Here are some more detailed pros and cons in the ongoing debate between the two. Read more to help guide your decision between eyeglasses and contacts in Kelowna today.

What are the Benefits of Contact Lenses?
Contact lenses and glasses work in essentially the same way. They’re more or less thin sheets of material that bend light as it enters your eye. This bent light compensates for any deviation from standard vision you might have.

Contacts however can give you a wider range of vision than glasses because they rest directly on your eyes. Similarly, because they’re underneath your eyelid they can be an easier option when exercising or for overall visibility through your glasses during bad weather and difficult atmospheres.

Contact lenses can be a problem, however, if you have trouble touching your own eyes regularly, work at a computer all day, or if you have a tendency to fall asleep with them still on your eyes. Since you have to replace contacts regularly, they can also be more expensive than glasses.

What are the Benefits of Eyeglasses?
Eyeglasses are an equally excellent option for your vision correction needs, but in a slightly different way. Because glasses sit on the bridge of your nose there will be no need to touch your eyes regularly as you do with contacts. Similarly, contacts can dry your eyes out, making them irritated and painful. Glasses, on the other hand, don’t directly touch your eyes. There are also a variety of specialty glasses that can protect you from the elements, either the sun or rain (though you’ll probably have to have more than one pair). Furthermore, glasses tend to be noticeably cheaper than contact lenses.

At the end of the day, whether contacts or eyeglasses are right for you comes down to what you prefer. How do you want to present yourself to the world and which choice will help you the most? You should also know that you don’t have to make a definitive choice. Many people own both contacts and eyeglasses and choose whichever they feel like on a particular day.
