Why is eyelid hygiene important?

Properly cleaning eyelashes and eyelids are important in protecting hundreds of glands that are responsible for secreting oils which are essential to your eye health and proper tear formation. Tears contain both oils and moisture that lubricate the surface of the eye and helps prevent dryness.  If you live in a desert climate like Kelowna, beautiful hot summers and cold dry winters, this will also increase the affects of dry eyes.

By preventing the build-up of Bacteria, eyelid hygiene prevents blepharitis ( an eye condition that makes your eyelids red, swollen, irritated, and itchy) and the possibility of Demodex.

See our optometrist for more information on managing dry eye that includes lid hygiene, proper eye drops and certain medications.
